Susan (Melanie Mayron) is set adrift when her best friend and roommate moves out abruptly to get married. Susan takes a job photographing bar mitzvahs to make ends meet as she finds herself living alone for the first time, trying to make it as an artist in New York.
Long overlooked but now considered by many to be the blueprint for films and TV like Frances Ha and Girls, Girlfriends is the debut film by director Claudia Weill. Produced independently, Weill went on to sell the film to Warner Brothers, who signed her to direct a further two features. The experience was not a good one, and after making just one more film, Weill moved into directing theatre and television.
This screening is followed by a pre-recorded Q&A with director Claudia Weill, hosted by film writer and programmer Jemma Desai.
